I have a lot of ideas that I write down and do nothing with, so I am challenging myself to make a Minimum Viable Writeup in an hour to share those ideas and thoughts with others. Be prepared for poor writing and visuals.
I am not really a phone designer, most of my work is in Augmented and Virtual Reality, but I do get bored with my phone… and all phones…. they really look the same these days, I miss the days of unique phones just a little bit…
But, now there’s the newest thing! Hole punch screens! We get the best of having a edge to edge display AND a selfie camera! And I am sure they are doing other cool stuff with it! not just leaving a black dot in the middle of the screen!
So! We’re entering an age with built in cameras! I am so glad designers are using this to shake up now monotonous design language of Android pho….
That…. it’s a hole… in the screen…. are you….going to do anything with it? I mean, we even have design guidelines on what to do with the ‘notch’ but this, is just ignoring it. What if we wanted to actually do something cool with it?
The Thought
Can we use the hole to make more room on the screen elsewhere? I mean, the user’s eye is going to get drawn there anyway, so can we do this:
So, first things first, we’re going to take care of the battery status, it’s definitely the most important thing! (not my photoshop skills suck, so prepare for that)
Battery Level
This is a pretty simple idea, but why not make the battery status right where your eye is going to look anyway?
The Time
A hard to read clock! But hey, it’s something! Like, I think it’s pretty cute, and someone with more that the hour!
Notifications
I like this one, make the hole something important, something that works with the hole and doesn’t ignore it.
in summary
I don’t like when there’s a random hole in my screen that is ignored by the operating systems…. if you’re going to have a broken pot, throw some gold in there.
Like, comment, and subscribe! But really, you guys have, hints about my photoshop skills, or job offers to run Huawei’s design department are all appreciated!
